HUANGPU
summary

Huangpu Port is located on the north bank of the Pearl River Estuary in the southeast of Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, China. It is the largest coastal and ocean transportation hub in South China. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties, Huangpu Harbor (the ancient port of Huangpu) was already the outer harbor for ships to berth in and out of Guangzhou. Sun Yat-sen's "Strategy for the Founding of a Nation" proposed a plan to build a southern port in Huangpu Port. The wharf was built in the 26th year of the Republic of China (1937). The Whampoa Port Opening Supervision Office signed a contract with the Dutch Port Management Company, relying on Dutch port construction technology, and the steel sheet pile shore wharf and wooden wharf were built in June of the following year. By 1948, Zhongshan Highway (now known as Zhongshan Avenue), steel sheet pile wharf, special railway line (Huangpu Railway Branch), warehouses, dormitories, office buildings and other auxiliary facilities connecting Huangpu District to the urban area were completed. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the port was reopened in October 1950 after repairing the port area and dredging the channel. Subsequently, the scale continued to expand and the facilities continued to improve. The passenger terminal was completed in 1961, and a new port area was opened in Duntou Dongji in 1973. It was merged into Guangzhou Port in December 1987 and the Guangzhou Port Authority was established. In 1986, it was named one of the eight scenic spots of Yangcheng with "Huangpu Yunqiao".

Port of HuangPu

Guangzhou is the birthplace of my country's Maritime Silk Road, and it is also the only ever-lasting foreign trade port with the oldest qualifications in history. As the outer port of Guangzhou's foreign trade, the Pineapple Temple, which was located in Miaotou Village, Nangang, Huangpu during the Tang Dynasty, gradually developed into the outer port of Guangzhou's foreign trade in the Qing Dynasty. Especially in the 24th year of Kangxi (1685), after the Qing government set up the Guangdong Customs in Guangzhou and set up the Huangpu registration gate at the Jiangyuan Wharf to the south of Huangpu Village, Huangpu Village became the only place for Sino-foreign trade and to impose tariffs on foreign merchant ships. Place.

In the 22nd year of Emperor Qianlong (1757), the Qing government announced the abolition of the customs of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Fujian, leaving only the Guangdong customs, and made a decision that “the port will be set in Guangdong” and that barbarian ships “can only be berthed in Guangdong for trade”. As a result, the huge Chinese maritime foreign trade was concentrated in Guangzhou, and it lasted until the 20th year of Daoguang (1840), which lasted for a century.

After the Opium War, Guangzhou's primacy in foreign trade was replaced by Shanghai, the ancient port of Huangpu gradually lost its former prosperity, and the Jiangyuan Wharf was abandoned due to siltation year after year, which was not conducive to the berthing of ships. During the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty (1862-1874), the Huangpu registration gate of the Guangdong Customs was moved to Changzhou Island, but the name "Huangpu" was still used.
